    The city of Razan

Located within 75km of the capital of the province, an area of 2729km2 has been allocated to the county of Razan, approximately 14 percent of the entire province of Hamadan. The city of Razan is the largest in the county and is located at the main road from Hamedan to Tehran. Other than Razan the three precincts of Sardrood, Markazi and Qorveh Darjazin include two other cities of the county named Qorveh Darjazin (Urban area) and Damaq. The county is located approximately in the centre of the province with the province of Qazvin to its North and Northwest, Markazi province on its East, the city of Hamedan to its South and The Kaboudarahang county limiting its western borders. The Kharqan mountain range is located on the Northeast of Razan county with its highest point being within the area of Urban Razan, standing at 2630 meters above sea level. Due to the fact that the county is located towards the north end of the province, it is relatively colder than the other counties and has a more temperate climate in the summer. The city itself is located within a plain with the Zagros mountain range surrounding it.

    Etymology

There have been two narratives regarding the etymology of "Razan". The first indicated that Razan is derived from the word "Raayzan" meaning hospitable. The narrative further explains that Razan was initially a caravansary, located at the intersection of roads from Zanjan, Qazvin and Hamedan leading to the then capital, Isfahan with travelers seeing it as their next resting point after the Abbasid caravansary in Avaj. Hence, overtime, "Raayzan" changed to Razan. The second narrative however, explains that because of the many vineyards in the region referred to locally as "Raz", it was initially named "Razaan" meaning many vineyards which overtime, changed to Razan.
